Sanur · What to do

Best things to do in Sanur

The best things to do in Sanur are not the loudest things to do in Bali. This is a place for good mornings, easy movement and low-key days — try to turn it into a nightlife district and you'll miss what it's actually good at.

Walk the beachfront path at sunrise

Whole beachfront

Sanur is Bali's east-facing sunrise coast, with roughly 5 km of flat paved promenade from the harbour side down to Mertasari. The morning walk is the defining local ritual — coffee, sea air, no negotiations.

Cycle the promenade

Whole beachfront

The same ~5 km path is cycle-friendly and genuinely continuous — rare in Bali. Rent along Jl. Danau Tamblingan and ride the coast rather than fighting traffic.

Swim — but time the tide

Calmer central & south sections

The offshore reef makes Sanur calmer and shallower than south Bali's surf beaches: good for gentle bathing and family play. Honest caveat — at low tide the lagoon can get too shallow for a satisfying swim, so go when the tide is in.

Le Mayeur Museum

North · near Bali Beach Hotel

Sanur's most distinctive cultural stop: the seaside home of Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur, with a collection of 88 paintings. The best way to add texture to a stay without leaving the district.

Mertasari Beach

South end

The quieter, family-friendlier southern end of the promenade — a good place to reset when central Sanur feels too built-up.

Sindhu Night Market

Central-north, inland

A low-key local-food option for the evening. Sanur nights are mild rather than wild — a food stop and a promenade walk suit the town better than manufactured nightlife.

Paddleboard or aqua yoga

Sanur beachfront waters

The calm reef-protected water makes Sanur one of the more reasonable places in Bali to try SUP or aqua yoga — balance over adrenaline.

Fast boat to Nusa Penida or Lembongan

North · Sanur Harbour / Matahari Terbit

Sanur's tactical advantage: the modern harbour terminal (operational since 2022) runs daily fast boats to the Nusa islands, typically a 30–60 minute crossing. Sleep somewhere calm and still make the islands work — verify your operator's exact departure point, luggage and weather rules before booking.

The short version

One full day: sunrise walk, long breakfast, the Le Mayeur museum or a beach-path cycle, a tide-timed swim, easy dinner. Two or three days: add Mertasari, one calm-water activity, and a harbour departure to the Nusa islands. Not hectic, not flashy — just easy to enjoy.
